3. The Benefits of Self-Efficacy
About this Lecture
In this lecture, we think about what some benefits of self-efficacy are on athletes, focusing in particular on: (i) the first key benefit being the individual can make more driven decisions, as they believe in their ability to be successful; (ii) the second key benefit being the influence it has on the level and type of goals individuals and teams set for themselves; (iii) the third key benefit being the association between high efficacy and a drive to work hard towards goals and to overcome challenges; (iv) the fourth key benefit being that it brings about perseverance and resilience towards goals and overcoming challenges; (v) the fifth benefit being a positive response to failure.
In this course, Dr Jamie Barker (Loughborough University) explores self-efficacy in the context of sport and exercise performance. In the first lecture, we think about how self-efficacy and self-confidence are defined and differentiated. In the second lecture, we think about Bandura’s four sources of self-efficacy: past success, vicarious experiences, verbal persuasion, and emotional state. In the third lecture, we think about some of the key benefits of a high level of self-efficacy on sporting performance. Next, we think about some techniques for developing self-efficacy, including imagery and hypnosis. In the fifth and final lecture, we think about how self-efficacy and arrogance can be differentiated.
Dr Jamie Barker is a senior lecturer in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University. Dr Barker’s research interests include intervention effectiveness, group dynamics, leadership and resilience within applied sport and performance research. Some of Dr Barker’s recent publications include 'Psychological support for sport coaches: An exploration of practitioner psychologist perspectives' (2018) and 'Investigating the effects of irrational and rational self-statements on motor-skill and hazard-perception performance' (2018).
