Television – Style and Storytelling

In this course, Dr Simone Knox (University of Reading) looks at the style and storytelling of Television. In the first module, we look at what television and television studies are. After this, we look at some long-standing perspectives of television style. Then, we look at some new perspectives in television style. In the penultimate module, we explore some long-standing narratives in television storytelling. Finally, we look at some new narratives in television storytelling.

What is Television and Television Studies?

In the first module, we look at what television and television studies are. In particular, we will focus on: (i) a definition of television studies and its history as a field of study; (ii) the history of television and technological change; (iii) the globalisation of television; (iv) the change formats and budgets of television shows and channels; and (v) the growth in prestige television, including a discussion of the impact of HBO.
