Number II – OCR GCSE (J560)

In this course, Dr Thomas Woolley (Cardiff University) works with numbers, covering Topics 1.02a, 1.02b, 1.02c, 11.02a, and 11.02b in the OCR GCSE (9-1) Mathematics (J560) Specification. In the first mini-lecture, we introduce key terms, such as multiples, factors, highest common factor (HCF), and lowest common multiple (LCM) (Topics 1.02a, 1.02c). In the second mini-lecture, we learn about prime numbers and their properties (Topics 1.02a, 1.02b). In the third mini-lecture, we explore prime factorisation and how it can be used to determine the HCF and LCM of sets of numbers (Topics 1.02b, 1.02c). In the fourth mini-lecture, we explore systematic listing strategies, such as the use of tables and trees (Topics 11.02a and 11.02b). In the fifth mini-lecture, we learn about the product rule and combinations formula 'n choose k' for computing various types of combinations (Topic 11.02b).

Multiples and Factors – 1.02a, 1.02c

In this mini-lecture, we discuss Topics 1.02a and 1.02c with a discussion of multiples and factors. We consider: (i) examples of factors and multiples; (ii) how to determine the complete list of factors of a number; (iii) the highest common factor (HCF); and (iv) the lowest common multiple (LCM).
