Inchoate Offences – Attempts

In this course, Professor John Child (University of Birmingham) explores inchoate offences. In the first module, we introduce attempts liability. In the second module, we look at the Criminal Attempts Act 1981. In the third module, we examine the actus reus for an attempt, before turning to impossible attempts in the fourth module. In the fifth module, we consider the mens rea for attempts, and the problems raised by the conflicting principles in Khan (1990) and Pace and Rogers (2014).

Inchoate Liability

In this module, we introduce inchoate liability, focusing in particular on (i) the meaning of inchoate offences (ii) specific and general inchoate offences (iii) attempts (iv) why we criminalise attempts liability (v) the tension between social protection and culpability as justifications for attempts liability.
