Human Rights in the UK

In this course, Dr Frederick Cowell (Birkbeck, University of London) explores human rights in the UK. In the first module, we look at the history of human rights in the UK, and the significance of the Human Rights Act 1998. In the second module, we examine the right to life. In the third module, we investigate the responsibilities of governments and public bodies to protect specific individuals from being victims of criminal acts, and to investigate deaths where they happen. In the fourth module, we focus on freedom of speech, before finally turning to the right to liberty in the fifth and final module.

The Human Rights Act 1998

In this module, we look at human rights in the UK, focusing in particular on (i) sources of human rights law in the UK (ii) the European Convention on Human Rights (iii) the impact of the Human Rights Act 1998.
