Britain – Politics, 1810-30

In this course, Professor Jeremy Black (University of Exeter) discusses British politics between 1810 and 1830, and the governments of Lord Liverpool and the Tories. In the first module, we look at the effect of foreign policy on Lord Liverpool's government. After this, we look at why Britain was unstable in 1815 and what the government response was to this instability. Then, we look at the significance of the Peterloo Massacre of 1819. In the fourth module, we explore the relationship between Lord Liverpool and the Tories and George VI. Then, we discuss the significance of the issue of Catholic Emancipation in dividing the Tory Party. Finally, we look at how Britain was able to avoid revolution in 1830.
