About the lecture

In this module, we think about the ongoing transition towards renewable energy sources and shifts in the supply and demand dynamics of the global energy market. We focus on: (i) where the present transition fits into previous historic transformations of the energy system; (ii) how the renewable transition’s emphasis on environmental concerns distinguishes it from those in the past; (iii) shifts in global demand, particularly the rapid growth in energy consumption in developing economies such as China; (iv) the key drivers of this growing demand, such as population growth and socioeconomic development; (v) the present global energy supply mix.

About the lecturer

Dr Jonathan Clarke is Assistant Professor in Global Sustainable Development at the University of Warwick. His research focuses on urban resilience and sustainability, infrastructural adaptations to climate change, and access to water and energy in cities.
