A Case Study of Nigeria

In this course, Professor Abiodun Alao (King’s College London) gives us a comprehensive profile of the country of Nigeria. To begin, we: (i) investigate Nigeria’s history pre- and post-independence in 1960; (ii) its politics since gaining independence; (iii) the state of Nigeria’s economy and the influence of transnational corporations; (iv) the role of religion and ethnicity in modern-day Nigeria; and finally (v) the external relationships of Nigeria with other countries of the world.

A Profile of Nigeria

In this first lecture, we focus on developing a profile of Nigeria since its independence in 1960. We delve into the nation’s political, economic and social complexities, including its diverse ethnic landscape of over 500 groups. We also examine Nigeria’s colonial past, and its evolution as a sovereign nation. To finish, we also learn about Nigeria’s contribution to global music, film and sports.
