The Mind-Body Problem

In this course Dr Ralph Weir (University of Lincoln) explores the mind-body problem. In the first module, we think about what we mean by the mind-body problem, and consider the kind of perception involved in developing an account of the mind-body relationship. After that, in the second lecture, we look at ancient dualist and monist solutions to the mind-body problem. Here, we focus on Plato’s account of the immortality of the soul in the Phaedo, and Aristotle’s hylomorphism in relation to the soul in his De Anima. In the third module, we introduce Cartesian dualism, and René Descartes' arguments from conceivability and divisibility; before turning in the fourth module to behaviourism and Gilbert Ryle’s objections to Descartes. In the fifth module, we look at materialism in its ancient and modern guises, and outline the causal-closure argument for mind-brain identity theory. Finally, we examine the hard problem of consciousness, and contemporary arguments for qualia.

The Mind-Body Problem

In this module, we think about what we mean by the mind-body problem, focusing in particular on (i) natural distinctions drawn between physical and mental properties (ii) D.E. Harding’s comments on a ‘headless experience’ and its delineation in Ernst Mach’s self-portrait (iii) the philosophical problem of explaining the relationship between mind and body.
