British Empire – The High Noon of Empire, 1815-1902

In this course, Dr Sascha Auerbach (University of Nottingham) explores the ‘high noon’ of the British Empire, beginning with the defeat of Napoleon in 1815, and closing with the end of the Second Boer War in 1902. As we move through the course, we consider how the Empire was ruled and governed in this period, before looking more closely at particular regions in the Empire—including British India and Africa—including how attitudes to the Empire changed over the course of the century.

Colonial Administration

In this module, we focus on the administration of the British Empire: how was the Empire ruled and governed, and what was the balance between control from London and from the colonies themselves.
